Did you know July 1st is International Joke Day? Humans find joy in making each other laugh, so it seems fitting that we dedicated a whole day to it! It’s the perfect excuse for both yourself and your child to tap into your silly sides and add some laughter to your day!
Did you know the classic “knock-knock” joke actually traces all the way back to Shakespeare? In his play Macbeth, there's a scene that many believe inspired the familiar joke we know today.
And here's another fun fact: laughing can actually boost your brainpower! Not only is humor fun and entertaining, but studies show that it helps improve mental health, memory, and creative thinking which is perfect for young writers.

1. Write a story about why the chicken crossed the road.
2. All of the grown-ups at your school have been replaced by funny clowns. Write a diary entry about your day at school. What new rules have been made? What subjects are you studying? What did you eat for lunch?
3. Write a knock knock joke about a talking pineapple.
4. Write an acrostic poem with the word ‘LAUGH’. Make each line a joke.
5. ‘Laughter is the best medicine’ - write a persuasive essay to support this statement.
6. Imagine that after the zoo closes and the humans have gone home, the animals host a comedy show. Which zoo animal do you think would tell the funniest jokes, and why? Give an example of one of their jokes.
7. How do turtles talk to each other? By using shell phones! Can you write a funny joke about your favorite animal?
8. Write an adventure story about a superhero called Hilarious Hillary and how she used the power of laughter to save the world.
9. Finish the story: As I wandered through the whispering woods, beams of sunlight shone through the leaves. As I rounded the mossy walkway, I stumbled upon a unicorn resting beside a crystal clear stream. Its silver mane was dull, and its eyes shimmered with sadness. I stepped closer, heart fluttering, and the unicorn looked up at me with a heavy sigh. “I’ve lost my sparkle,” it said in a gloomy voice. “And the only way to bring it back... is for someone to make me laugh.”
10. Write a funny play about a group of pirates who are on a quest for gold, but accidentally take the wrong bag and end up with a sack of apples instead of treasure.
11. Imagine you were throwing a party for International Joke Day. Write a party plan. Who would you invite? What food would you serve? What activities would you arrange?
12. Can you remember a time you laughed until you cried? Tell us about it! What made you laugh? How did it make you feel?
13. Can you tell us about the funniest person you know? How do you know them, and what makes them so funny?
14. Do some research on International Joke Day, and write an informative report about it.
15. Create a new funny fashion trend, and write a persuasive essay to convince people to wear it. Draw a picture of what it would look like.
16. Write a story about an astronaut who lands on a distant planet where the aliens speak only in jokes, riddles, and puns. To communicate, the astronaut must learn to joke back.
17. Write a report about the funniest film you have ever seen.
18. Look at the object to your left-hand side and write a funny story about it.
19. Do you have a favorite funny prank? Write a step-by-step instruction guide for it.
20. The principal wants to ban laughter from your school. Write a persuasive letter to them explaining why laughter is important for children.
21. Rewrite the lyrics to your favorite song to make them funny!
22. How many words can you create with the letters in ‘COMEDIAN’? Write a story including all the words you came up with.
